Summary:
The prince is looking for a true princess to be his wife, but all the girls
he meets are too rude, too vain or too greedy. One stormy night a young lady
knocks on the palace door claiming to be a princess, so the queen decides to put
her to the test. Will she feel the pea underneath the huge pile of mattresses?
This classic fairy tale is wonderfully brought to life with soft, colourful
illustrations by popular illustrator Maja Dusikova.
Author Bio:
Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author and writer of children's
fairy tales, such as The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina and The Ugly Duckling, which
have become much-loved classics around the world. Maja Dusikova was born in
Slovakia in 1946. She has illustrated over forty books for children. She lives
with her family in Florence, Italy.
Review:
The Princess and the Pea is a timeless classic fairy tale that has been done over and over again. Though this version is similar to the rest, it's the delightful illustrations that set this book apart. Illustrator Maja Dusikova has created a realistic feel to the story which is hard to duplicate. The illustrations are soft and charming, keeping up with the time period of castles and the unique characters you would find in them. The detail makes the reader feel as if they were apart of the story, wondering if the princess who arrived is really who she says she is. Though the pea tells the truth, in order for her to feel it, it must be made of steel. A wonderful book fit for readers young and old.
